Kirk had his first back specialist appointment a few weeks ago after two years of no check ups. Oops! During those 2 years of absence, he has spent a fair bit of it suffering with bad Ankylosing Spondylitis pain. After deciding to fix his AS using food (following no-starch, limited lactose and a stint of juicing) along with loads of prayer, the pain had completely gone! Having the pain gone was incredible in itself, but the biggest thing for us would be finding out if these changes have had any impact on the damage to his spine.

Keeping in mind that you can not get rid of AS. It is an auto-immune disease. We were also led to believe that you can not reverse the damage that has already occurred through AS – once an area has been affected, that’s it. No fixing.

Kirk explained to the specialist that he has had no pain, no drugs and loads of healthy un-starchy food.  The doctor was very intrigued and asked Kirk to get a xray to see if this diet change has impacted his spine in any way. He was enthusiastic about it as Kirk is currently his only patient who is not on any AS drugs and using food as medicine to pause and possibly heal this auto immune disease.

So, Kirk went and had an x-ray. We were really hoping that the result would be that his back had no extra damage. We figured though, that there would be a bit more damage since his 8-year-old x-rays, as Kirk had suffered a year of pain since then.

Last Tuesday, Kirk went into the back specialist armed with his old and latest x-rays. The doctor took a long hard look at them and then made his announcement. Kirk’s back damage had not only stopped….but REVERSED!! The erosion and fusing had begun to fix itself. The side with the most damage was actually healing with the latest x-rays showed this. The specialist asked Kirk all about his diet and what he has been doing. He said that the proof is in the x-rays and no more was needed to convince him that by changing your diet has done wonders…better than what drugs could do. Food is medicine and if you let it, the body can heal.

All the specific food changes and juicing has paid off in more ways than we could every imagine. Thank you Lord!

P.S. Just after Kirk had his recent x-ray, we went out and had dinner Hogs Breath. Kirk had been hanging out to try some curly-fries (an old favourite…and unfortunately starch). We figured this would be a good test to see how much starch really did affect his back.  The following day after his curly fries feast, he had no pain. As well as no pain the next day, or the next. BUT by the third day, AS pain was back and at a pain level of 4/10! It was the only starch he had eaten and it took 2 days to leave his system and for the pain to leave again. I asked Kirk if it the fries were worth it and he said NO WAY…but they did taste mighty awesome
