Body Reboot

For those who follow Farmer K’s Kitchen on Facebook,  last night you would have read that my husband and I are tackling a 7 day Body Reboot using only juices and smoothies for sustenance. Our purpose is to nut-out which foods are possibly aggravating my husbands back pain (you can read about that here). I don’t have what he has but I figured I may as well jump on board with it as well. Things are always a lot easier when you have someone else doing it alongside you. Drinking your raw veggies and fruit isn’t such a bad idea for your health either!

Since the start of trying to heal my husbands Ankylosing Spondylitis through changing his diet, we have seen some success. This has really spurred us on to find our solution using food as a way to heal and limit the side effects, instead of the heavy drug way which causes some major side effects.

We started with no starch in his diet and his pain went from a horrible 8/10, down to around a 3 or 4/10. The past few days he has been a 1/10. Impressive stuff! The only reason we are doing this juice/smoothie reboot is to figure out if there is anything else that could be giving him grief. With the no-starch diet, there are “fringe foods” and the way they react to your body all depends on the individual. So we decided to get rid of everything except for unstarchy veggies, fruit, and unstarchy nut butters.

I am keeping a bit of a log book under the title of [ K's Reboot ] at the top of this blog for anyone who is interested in seeing what we are eating each day and how it has been affecting his back and our moods :)

Has anyone else tried a juice or smoothie detox before? Got some tips to share?

    Hi Katrina,
Really interested in how you go with this and your starch free eating plan as I too have been advised to steer clear of starchy food in order to help heal my gut. Hope we can catch up soon.
    Thanks for sharing your findings!!
    Teish x

    • Hey Teish! I will let you know for sure. It is all a bit of an experiment at the moment, but the starch-free has definitely helped! I also have gut problems (Jodes may have told you that you and I seem to have similar coconut milk/cream/flour problems). I was getting tummy cramps and bloating every single night…and not a sign of gluten in my diet! Since eliminating starch, originally for Kirk’s sake only, I have been so much better. Hoping it continues this way. I was disappointed I couldn’t come today. Kirk had an eye appointment and I was driving all over the coast picking things up and dropping them off…in the RAIN! Maybe next Thursday if you girls are free? Love Treens xx

Such a wonderful idea! I am on day 6 of my 30 day juice “feast” reboot. I am LOVING it! I have already learned one life changing thing, the next time I get into a huge flare, instead of reaching for pain pills or NSAIDS, I will be reaching for a glass of green juice. It really cut down on my inflammation, and I my body feels so much more relaxed. I only had one negative reaction in the past 5 days, and that was to orange juice. I pretty much usually avoid organes as I have always suspected I couldn’t tolerate them, and learned yet again, nope I can’t! All other fruits & veggies have been totally fine, even starchy ones aren’t bothering me at all juiced, including ginger root, which I have really missed being starch free for these past 5 months.
Best of luck to both of you! Can’t wait to hear about your wonderful expereinces juicing!!!

    • That is so interesting about the oranges. I haven’t tried them on Kirk yet. He has really struggled these first two days, so I am hoping he wakes up feeling better today. He has a detox headache, aches and pains, very tired, etc. He is determined though, so that is good. I am very interested about those starchy fruits and veggies. I really wanted to try some beetroot, but maybe later once he is feeling better. Have you tried beetroot?
It is so wonderful to hear that you are feeling so good!! xo

I did juice beetroot a couple times and everything seemed okay. I really really like using ginger root, which I dearly missed the past 5 months.

OMG though, today is Day 7 and I have the worst cold symptoms. Sore throat, runny nose, etc, BUT I DON’T have any AS Back Pain Today, so I think it’s just all part of the detox.
        So far:
Days 1 & 2 I was super tired and achey
Days 3 – 6 were pretty awesome, felt great, a little foggy, but still ready to conquer the world
Day 7 – stuck in bed sick – “detoxing” is hard work!! Total Healing Crisis I believe.

I am determined to push through!!

        xoxo,
        Andrea

Hey, I just read this interesting stuff on fasting to fight arthritis http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_arthritis_diet.html
I was up googling “juice fast healing crisis” and came across it. Very interesting stuff, a lot of good info on a broad scale for arthritis as a whole. I just wanted to add that later in the afternoon of Day 6 I started to experience some healing crisis pains, where old injuries, aches and pains were awakened. I got this incredible hip pain I hadn’t felt in years since my hips / SI joints fused, and it knocked me out for a little while, but happy to report a few hours later it vanished. I have also had other roving pains come an go, but its nothing like my normal AS symptoms, as when I get a normal AS flare it sets in and doesn’t let go for a few days.

I am excited to hear about you & your husband’s results!!

Oh, and promise me you will check out this link, and watch the most increbible video at the bottom of the page all about overcoming an impossible auto-immune disease thruough diet: natural-treatments-for-multiple-sclerosis

    • Thanks for the info! I am off to watch the video right now and just read the article – so interesting and wonderful to see what we are trying to achieve is achievable…with scientific evidence.
I hope your cold gets better asap! Kirk is feeling much better today and seems to be emerging from his land of fog. His mega headache from yesterday has turned into a miniature one that he can feel when he thinks about it. Thanks for listing how you went over those fews days too. Keep me updated on how you go! xx
